Sheldon, initiated the first coal shaft in September 1871, leading to the formation of the Burlingame and Scranton Coal Company in 1872. The town was named after Scranton, Pennsylvania, reflecting its coal mining heritage. In its early years, Scranton's growth was closely tied to the coal industry.
